A car has crashed into a power pole connected to a major transformer in the Hamilton suburb of Hillcrest this afternoon, leaving parts of the area without power.
The crash happened at 3.50pm at the Carrington and Masters Ave intersections and the roads remain blocked while police, fire and power companies work to fix the problem.
Waikato DCC senior sergeant Ray Malcomson said the driver had left the scene by the time police arrived.
Police had been told either friends or people driving past the crash drove the male driver to Waikato Hospital.
The power lines are being treated as live and the wires are draped across cars parked on the side of the roads. The cars were luckily empty when the pole fell, he said.
