KEY POINTS:
A car has crashed into a police car head-on after a high-speed chase in Whangarei this morning.
A 44 year-old man faces drugs and driving charges after police alleged he drove up to a road checkpoint, slowed down and then sped off.
Police spokeswoman Sarah Kennett said police chased the Holden Calais along Kamo Rd as it reached speeds of up to 140km an hour.
She said the Holden went down a dead end road on a new subdivision, did a u-turn and sped back past two police cars.
Ms Kennett said the Holden the sped down Corks Rd, away from police.
But as police rounded a corner, they were met head-on by the alleged offender's car, which had turned around and was on the wrong side of the road, she said.
Ms Kennett said both cars were extensively damaged and two police officers received minor injuries.
She said the driver of the Holden and two women in the car were not injured.
"Police found 6.2 grams of methamphetamine and 2 grams of cannabis in the vehicle," Ms Kennett said.
The man will appear in the Whangarei District Court tomorrow.
