A car has collided with a fire engine just south of Gore.

Police and Fire services were called to Mataura at 9.20pm.

A southern fire shift manager said the vehicles collided when the Gore fire appliance was traveling to Mataura for training. It didn't have a siren on and wasn't traveling at speed.

The shift manager said the single occupant of the vehicle is injured.

"A fire engine has been involved in an accident with a vehicle one person was trapped in the car. The fire crew are safe and extricating the patient from the vehicle.

"It's too early to comment on damage at this stage. I'd say they are injured but to what extent I'm not sure."

The occupant of the car has been transported to Gore Hospital in a moderate to minor condition.

The southbound lane is closed and diversions are in place via Cardigan Bay Rd and Carteret St.
