KEY POINTS:
Ever wished you had one of those night-vision things they have in movies? You know, the ones that let you see what the baddies are up to, while you remain invisible? Ever thought how cool that would be on your boat? Especially at night or in the fog?
Night-vision cameras aren't completely new, of course. However the latest FLIR Navigator II is certainly a step up, incorporating several new features specifically designed to improve night-time navigation.
These include new software that allows the user to select multiple colour palettes. This won't mean much to the average boat owner or skipper but, basically, it means improved performance in a variety of conditions. For example, the new software makes it possible to "see" in pitch darkness or in fog; while a red-light option helps preserve night vision.
Digital zoom also makes it possible to focus in and clearly identify objects in the distance.
The Navigator II also features a specifically built, robust pan/tilt housing with a difference. If the camera is accidentally knocked or mechanically forced, it will simply slip on its protective clutch and then return to its original position without sustaining any damage.
Another new feature is a small on-screen icon showing the rotation of the camera so the operator knows exactly where it is pointing.
Like previous FLIR models, the Navigator II has a 360-degree angle of view and the ability to tilt and pan in virtually any direction.
This allows the skipper to literally see in front, to one side or even behind while under way or at rest and in virtually any weather condition from completely fine to dense fog.
This is obviously good for security on moorings or in ports where the vessel could be under threat and when under way in unknown or hazardous waters.
