A Canterbury student is in hospital with a serious spinal fracture he suffered jumping from a roof into a paddling pool with his hair on fire as a stunt.
The daring act was done to join University of Canterbury Engineering Society (ENSOC), whose guidelines say a filmed stunt is a requirement for candidates hoping to join the committee, Fairfax reported.
The 20-year-old remains in hospital after he apparently hit the side of the paddling pool during his two-storey plunge last Friday night, the same day as ENSOC's infamous RoUndie 500 event.
His flatmates told Fairfax the man was not drinking that night, calling the incident a "freak accident".
