A grass fire that closed a state highway in Canterbury and forced residents of one home to be evacuated has been brought under control.
The blaze, which closed State Highway 1, 6km north of Rolleston between Robertsons Rd and Waterholes Rd, spread to around 10ha, the Fire Service said.
Firefighters used three helicopters, seven fire trucks and eight tankers to bring the fire under control, Fire Service Canterbury area commander Dave Berry said. They spent more than two hours battling the blaze, which was called in around 1pm.
It was now contained, and firefighters were in the dampening down stage.
No-one was injured and no property was damaged in the fire, but one house was evacuated as a precaution, Mr Berry said.
