Cantabrians needing to repair their property following the region's fatal earthquake last month, should only hire licensed tradespeople, the regulating body warns.
The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board (PGDB), the body which regulates the three trades, has heard of a number of instances of unqualified people undertaking restricted work.
"Ask a plumber, gasfitter or drainlayer for their licence and if they can't produce one, then don't let them do the work," PGDB deputy registrar Kern U'ren said.
Significant issues could arise when unqualified people undertook restricted work including potential poisoning, fire or disease, Mr U'ren said.
"Other issues can be just as problematic. Damage to properties can result due to poor workmanship by unlicensed tradespeople and this can have a significant impact on a property's value and resultant insurance claim."
Consumers can check if a plumber, gasfitter or drainlayer is authorised to carry out work by checking this website: www.pgdb.co.nz or calling 0800 743 262.
An estimated 182 people lost their lives in the March 22 earthquake and billions of dollars of damage was caused.
