Wellington
The comparisons between the Hurricanes and Brumbies' Super 12 rugby camps could not be more pronounced.
Brumbies coach Laurie Fisher has cobbled together a side for Saturday's crucial match against the Hurricanes in Wellington.
Injuries have deprived Fisher of halfback George Gregan, in-form No 8 Scott Fava, matchwinning first five-eighth Stephen Larkham and test wing Clyde Rathbone.
In the team are names few outside the Canberra club scene had heard of before the Super 12 started in February ? such as Ben Batger, Luke Burgess, Adam Wallace-Harrison, Alister Campbell, David Fitter and Sam Norton-Knight.
The Hurricanes have concerns over fullback Brent Ward, whose rib injury will sideline him until at least next week, while fringe flanker Scott Waldrom has had foot surgery and is out of rugby for at least a few months.
That aside, coach Colin Cooper has the luxury of an almost fit squad to choose from as he considers making possibly just one change for the match when he names his team tomorrow.
Lock Ross Kennedy sat out some of today's training session, watched by All Blacks coaches Graham Henry and Steve Hansen, and may not start the game at Westpac Stadium.
Kristian Ormsby and Paul Tito spent most of the time at lock with Tito expected to make it on to the bench for the first time since he was injured in the second round match against the Cats.
The largely settled nature of the Hurricanes squad and the plight facing the Brumbies suggests the home team should be heavy favourites on Saturday, but Cooper is keen to suggest otherwise.
"It might make them more dangerous," he said.
Skipper Tana Umaga said there were still too many quality players in the Brumbies to take them lightly.
Fisher is able to call on established players such as Stirling Mortlock, Mark Chisholm, Owen Finegan, Mark Gerrard, Matt Giteau, Tamaiti Horua, Jeremy Paul, Joel Wilson, Bill Young, Radike Samo and George Smith.
It will be Matt Henjak's fourth Super 12 start as he has watched Gregan for three years. He was looking forward to playing alongside his best mate, Giteau.
"We basically grew up together so our understanding on the field shouldn't be a problem," Henjak said.
"It will be a big challenge for not only Matt and I, but for the whole team. We need to win our final three games to be any hope of making the finals so the boys have been really focused on the job."
Giteau said the understanding between the pair had developed since they were playing in the backyard of their Canberra properties.
"We always hung out together as kids and have always played sport together and against each other.
"We would go to each other's house and play footy in the winter or cricket in the backyard during the summer. It was always pretty competitive.
"We're both going to have to play well to help the team win so it's a big challenge and big opportunity for us."
Burgess, 21, will be the reserve halfback, earning his first Super 12 call up, while Rathbone's place on the right wing will be filled by Batger.
