Wellington region cancer patients will have faster, better radiation treatment when a new linear accelerator (Linac) is commissioned in October, Health Minister Tony Ryall says.
The $5 million Linac was the first of its kind in Australasia, he said today.
"It will provide more advanced and effective treatments with reduced toxicity for patients, and, because it is faster, it will improve access to radiation therapy through the Capital and Coast District Health Board's region," Mr Ryall said.
Installation, testing, commissioning and training staff was due to be completed by October, when the new Linac would replace the current 14-year-old machine.
