Farmers are excited at the prospect of being able to let Canada Geese have it from both barrels.
The Government is looking at removing protection from the birds, meaning landowners could shoot them without having to consult Fish and Game.
Federated Farmers spokesman Donald Aubrey says the geese eat large amounts of grass and crops, including winter feed for stock.
He says the birds are having a considerable impact on agriculture, and farmers need the opportunity to defend themselves.
Donald Aubrey says geese droppings are also a hazard. He blames goose poo for a campylobacter outbreak in Central Otago, which killed more than 60 sheep.
