KEY POINTS:
The funeral of an English tourist killed when the campervan he was travelling in ignored a stop sign and crashed into a four-wheel-drive has been delayed so the driver can return to England to be a pallbearer.
Adam Birdsey, 23, died on Good Friday when the van driven by David McCallum crashed at a Blenheim intersection.
In Blenheim District Court on Monday, McCallum was fined $3000 and disqualified from driving for 12 months after admitting careless driving causing death and six counts of careless driving causing injury.
He had been travelling around New Zealand with four friends, including his best friend Mr Birdsey, and was not allowed to leave New Zealand until his sentencing.
McCallum's lawyer Mike Turner said outside the court that Mr Birdsey's funeral in the UK had been delayed until this Friday so McCallum could attend.
