Masterton's Ben Campbell is still not ready to go professional, despite a stunning victory in the Tauranga Open at the weekend where he romped to a four-shot win over some of New Zealand's best pro golfers.
In his understated way, Campbell said this week his result in the Charles Tour event was ''pretty good''.
Pretty good indeed. He worked his way around the par 70 Tauranga course with rounds of 66, 65, 64 and 66 for a total of 19 under, his lowest four-round total ever.
But mention going pro and the 18-year-old is quick to point out he's got a fair bit to get out of the way first. He admits the pro ranks might well be beckoning at some point but not in the immediate future.
Next week, he's fronting up at the second Charles Tour event of the year, the Muriwai Open in Auckland, and he's hoping history won't repeat. At the same event last year, he injured his wrist and was out of golf for several months. Then he's got a European trip which takes in the British and Scottish amateur tournaments and he's eyeing university later in the year.
On top of that, as New Zealand's top-ranked amateur, he's in line to make the Eisenhower Trophy team to play in Argentina this year.
The team is named in August and, if he maintains his form, Campbell could be treading in the footsteps of namesake Michael Campbell, who led the New Zealand team to victory in the 1992 Eisenhower Trophy.
