Ace Masterton golfer Ben Campbell has finished fourth-equal in the Asian amateur championships in Japan.
Campbell fired a four-under 280 to tie for fourth with Korea's Kyung-hoon Lee at the Kasumigaseki Country Club, an hour from Tokyo.
Hometown favourite Hudeki Matsuyama was a runaway winner of the title, returning a 15-under 269 and earning himself an invitation to compete in The Masters in 2011. Matsuyama was five shots clear of second-placed Tarquin MacManus, of Australia, with Japan's Yosuke Asaji third.
Campbell's first round of 71 was something of a mixed bag as he made five birdies but also dropped four shots to be in a share of 17th place. He improved nine spots with his second round of 69 to easily make the cut alongside other Kiwis Ryan Fox (Auckland), Daniel Pearce (Hastings), Pieter Zwart (Hastings) and Brad Kendall (Mt Maunganui).
A third round of one-over 72 saw Campbell tied for sixth and he came home powerfully with a 68, thanks to a hot start which saw him three under the card after just seven holes. He also had a birdie at the 17th but that was countered by a bogey on the final hole.
Campbell's fellow Eisenhower Trophy team-mate Fox was the second best of the New Zealanders in 34th place with a score of 293, made up of rounds of 76, 70, 74, 73. Pearce finished on 296 (75, 72, 78, 71), Zwart on 297 (74, 74, 79 and 70) and Kendall on 298 (73, 78, 73, 74).
