Masterton's Ben Campbell has bowed out in round one of the 117th British amateur golf championship at Royal Troon.
The New Zealand No2, who has finished runner-up twice in the Australian amateur, was beaten at the 20th hole in what was a great battle with American Tyler Raber.
Campbell is ranked 152 in the world and was the only Kiwi to progress to the match play stages of the event. He was beaten on extra holes by Raber.
It is a disappointing result for the Kiwi contingent contesting the Amateur Championship with the hope the event would provide good international competition ahead of the Eisenhower World Team's Championship in Turkey.
