HOWZAT? Calvin Ball, Lansdowne batsman, is stumped by Matthew McKenzie, Rathkeale keeper.

A rollicking 153 by Wairarapa skipper Henry Cameron paved the way for Lansdowne's 109-win over Rathkeale College in their Umpires Cup senior men's cricket match.

Coming to the Rathkeale College wicket on Saturday with Lansdowne in early trouble at 33-2 , Cameron immediately took the battle to the bowlers with remarkable success. Hitting out at every opportunity, he clubbed 14 sixes and nine fours from the 96 balls he faced, meaning 120 of his runs came in boundaries.

Not surprisingly then, Cameron dominated a third-wicket partnership with George Falloon (28) which produced 94 runs and then he and Choi Jackson threw caution to the wind in a fourth-wicket partnership worth 115 runs, Jackson 's 52 coming from 42 balls and including five fours and three sixes. Jackson was out with the score at 243 and Cameron continued on his way, finally being the seventh wicket to fall with the Lansdowne score at a healthy 283. The last three wickets then fell for just nine more runs and Lansdowne's 292 had been made in 40.2 overs.

It was a tough day at the office for most of the Rathkeale bowlers. John Ryan was the notable exception, his seven overs costing just 19 runs while he claimed three wickets. George Deans came on at fourth change and finished with 3-53.

Rathkeale College never threatened to overhaul the Lansdowne total in their turn at bat although seven of their batsmen did get into double figures. Ryan completed a handy all-round effort by top-scoring with 37 (two fours and four sixes) while Elliot Mason made 31 and Liam Burling 24. Heading the Lansdowne attack was Calvin Ball with 3-32 from 9.2 overs, while Jock Cameron took 2-27 and Hayden Barrett 2-21.

By contrast the Umpires Cup match at Greytown was a low-scoring affair, Greytown gaining their second successive win with a 25-run defeat of Red Star.

Batting first, Greytown struggled through to 131, the most productive partnership coming for the second wicket between Richard Kibblewhite (16) and Jake Ross (30), which produced 36 runs. Doing the damage with the ball for Red Star was Troy Burling, the last of the five bowlers used, finished with the superb figures of 6-20 from 7.5 overs.

If Greytown's batting was disappointing, Red Star's was more so. At 48-5, they were in dire straits and they were all out for 106. Daniel Stonely (22) and Richard French (21) were the top scorers. The wickets were shared around by the Greytown bowlers, Steve Coleman and Daniel Haxton taking three apiece and Seth Rance and Gordon Reisima two apiece.
