Masterton Masters swimmer Kirsten Cameron felt worse after the event than she did during it when winning the national Masters 2.5km open water championships at Taupo last weekend.
Cameron clocked 31mins 32.67secs and had three minutes to spare over second placegetter, Phillip Dickinson of Wellington, in what was her first serious open water swim since last October.
An aching shoulder did give her some discomfort on the way to victory but after settling into a good rhythm early on she was always confident of making a strong showing.
At the swim's end, however, it was somewhat different story with Cameron having an "attack of the shivers" and being wrapped in an electric blanket for about 20 minutes to avoid any possibility of hypothermia.
"It wasn't that the water was cold, I've swum in a lot colder in Wellington,"Cameron said. "But it didn't take long to come right.....maybe it's a sign of getting old!".
