A SPARKLING unbeaten century by opener Henry Cameron was not enough to get Lansdowne home in their Umpires Cup Wairarapa senior inter-club cricket match with the Keinzley Agvet Academy XI at Rathkeale on Saturday.
Chasing 217 for victory, Lansdowne were purring along at 184-4 with still 25 overs to be bowled when the weather intervened and the game was called off. However, their better run rate did give them the points advantage.
It was Cameron's second century of the current club season and he was typically aggressive, smashing seven 6s and 10 4s and dominating his team's reply to such an extent that the next highest scorer was Lee Ewington who was unbeaten on 20.
None of the Academy bowlers were spared punishment from Cameron's bat, and he was well on the way to taking them to a comprehensive win when the rains came.
Earlier the Academy innings had also been pretty much a one-player affair with opener Eddie Hopkins making 87.
By Cameron's standards he was relatively circumspect but still managed to hit nine 4s.
Will Rist chimed in with 36 and Jamie Hill 27.
Lansdowne used no fewer than eight bowlers and easily the most successful of them was talented youngster Choi Jackson who took 6-38 from 10 overs. He had just 1-23 after his fist six overs but his last four overs saw him snare five more scalps, two of them coming in his ninth over and two of them in his tenth.
The battle of the colleges saw Wairarapa College upset the odds and beat Gillette Cup national secondary schoolboys knockout competition semi-finalists Rathkeale College by five wickets. Brock Price with 41 and Thomas Merriman with 32 were the main contributors as Rathkeale were bundled out for 144.
Seth Rance continued his good form with the ball for Wairarapa College by taking 3-17 while Cameron Stoke took 3-30 and Joel Macklin 3-47
Wairarapa College overhauled the Rathkeale total for the loss of five wickets, thanks to steady knocks from Stone (26), Gareth Pottinger (30 not out) and Jeremy Anderson (32 not out). Bowling for Rathkeale, Duncan Watts and Andy Dodd claimed two wickets apiece.
A fine knock of 99 by Willie Tatham was the catalyst to Greytown's commanding 85-run win over Red Star. He and Mark Childs, who made 63, saw Greytown through to a healthy 248-9 and they then dismissed Red Star for 163 of which Corey Burling made 64 and Camus Wyatt 26.
