Papatoetoe residents hope that a new spy camera will curb night crime in the red-light Hunters Corner area.
The camera, to be switched on tomorrow, will target transsexual prostitutes soliciting clients and also focus on burglars and noisy drunks.
It will be monitored by Swiftlink Security in a six-month trial that will cost the Manukau City Council $20,000.
The camera will cover Great South Rd, Hoteo Ave and Sutton Cres.
Councillor Noel Burnside said monitors would contact police if there were incidents of "public disorder."
Last May, residents filmed night activities at Hunters Corner, identifying kerb crawlers - prostitutes' clients in cars - and passing the information to the police. They said incidents halved after word got around.
Senior Sergeant Dave Simpson said the camera was worth a try as police could not respond to all calls from residents.
