With spring upon us, Auckland organisations are offering volunteers the opportunity to get outside and get their hands dirty all while helping local environments.
The Kaipatiki Project is hosting two beach cleanup events as part of Mini-Ecofest 3-11 October, which will feature eco-friendly events and informative workshops and tours throughout the week. The cleanups will be on 4 October at Beach Haven and 10 October at Browns Bay. Volunteers will spend a couple of hours tidying up the streets, parks and beaches surrounding each neighbourhood. Gear and supervision will be provided and there will be a lunch and live music after the event.
The Kaipatiki Project produces approximately 25,000 new native plants annually. Over 8,000 volunteer hours are put into the organisation by over 800 volunteers per year.
The Motutapu Restoration Trust at Reid Homestead will be hosting nursery work and weed control volunteering opportunities on public volunteer days throughout the spring and summer.
Nursery work volunteers will help propagate native seedlings for the 2016 planting season, and weed control volunteers will help rid native forest of invasive exotic weeds like moth plant, apple of Sodom, woolly nightshade, gorse and rhamnus. A moderate level of fitness is required.
