A pregnant woman convicted of her fifth drink driving offence has sparked calls for tougher penalties for repeat offenders.
Kylie Wilson, 25, was this week sentenced to three months' home detention in the Rotorua District Court after admitting to being more than twice the legal limit when driving on September 9 last year. Wilson was six months' pregnant at the time and gave birth to a son in December.
Wilson said she was undertaking counselling for alcoholism and drug addiction.
David Garret, the Act MP behind the three-strikes legislation, said that the case was not out of the ordinary.
"That's not a particularly unusual case, I'm aware of a case where only the 10th conviction led to jail," he said.
Garret emphasised he was speaking from a personal perspective and not on behalf on the Act Party.
