A transport expert wants lower speed limits put in place for Christchurch's new inner city.
Canterbury University's Professor Simon Kingham has just returned from the Asia Pacific Cycling Conference in Australia.
He says strong evidence shows there is only a 10 per cent chance of a fatal injury during a crash if vehicles travel at 30 kilometres an hour.
Mr Kingham says lowering the speed limit to 30km/h is the single most effective way to increase safety, reduce fatal and serious accidents and encourage more women to cycle.
