Calls for Hawkes Bay, a major horticultural region, to be declared GE-free have been rejected by the Hastings District Council's rural community board.
Board members agreed that declaring Hastings GE-free would have no effect and could not be enforced.
Council staff said the Government was dealing with the issue by research and legislation.
