Both Auckland Council and The University of Auckland are under pressure to divest from fossil fuels in order to halt climate change.
Fossil Free Auckland University is demanding that the university catch up to its Australasian counterparts in establishing ethical investment policies. Auckland Uni is one of the last top universities in the region to have no clear policies on what it invests in, meaning it can put money in tobacco, munitions and fossil fuels.
This month over 2200 students, staff and alumni signed a petition demanding that the University divest from fossil fuels and establish an ethical investment policy.
Meanwhile on gofossilfree.org a campaign has begun to encourage Auckland Council to examine its investment portfolio and take money out of fossil fuels.
