Pack the Stadium!!!
That's the call from Netball Wairarapa officials as they prepare to host National Bank Cup sides Capital Shakers and Western Flyers at the Genesis Centre in Masterton tomorrow night.
It is the first time a game featuring two of the country's eight franchise teams has been played in the Wairarapa and a full house could encourage more matches of this calibre to be played here.
Especially with the glowing reputation the playing surface at the Genesis Recreation Centre has already earned from visiting teams who have come to Masterton to participate in regional superleague competition games.
Both the Shakers and the Flyers will be looking to use tomorrow's night's match -which gets under way at 7pm- as a means of building confidence for their Cup campaigns which start on April 28.
Former Silver Fern Waimarama Taumanu, who has coached England at international level., is in charge of the Wellington-based Shakers this year and she has two New Zealand under-21 players in Jamilah Gupwell and Emma McGeorge in her squad. Joining them will be captain Cushla Lictwark, Jo Haanstra, Sacha Coogan, Lovila Paki, Daya Pritchard, Katie Ritchie, Victoria Smith, Frances Solia, Geraldine Solia and Kylie Young.
Another former Silver Fern in Tanya Dearns coaches the Flyers, who are based in the Manawatu. She too has a couple of national under-21 players in her line-up in Kiley Hikawai and Charlotte Knight and also a New Zealand A team member in Erika Burgess. Others in the Flyers squad are Amber Bellringer, Jane Bingham, Lauren Burgess, Malu Fa'asavalu, Chanel Haggart, Rebecca Kupa, Louise Moffett, Hayley Stockman and Florence Tauli.
Preceding the match between the two Cup teams will be a "friendly" between the Wairarapa and Naenae Collegians regional superleague teams. It will start at 4.30pm and will be the second game played by the Wairarapa side in less than 24 hours. Tonight at 7pm they take on Wellington East Old Girls at the Genesis Recreation Centre in a superleague play-off match, a testing assignment for Wairarapa considering that Wellington East are considered little inferior to St Mary's Old Girls, which beat Wairarapa by more than 20 goals in the last of their preliminary round games.
Wairarapa coach Marion Tulloch will be stressing to her side the importance of allowing Wellington East only minimum time to launch their attacks as they are reputedly strong at the shooting end of the court.
Amongst the spectators tonight will be former Australian coach Jill McIntosh, pictured above, who conducted a two-hour session at the Genesis Recreation Centre this morning for coaches of primary school and junior teams. Tomorrow she will have the creation of a winning philosophy when she speaks at a breakfast function organised by Netball Wairarapa at St Matthew's Collegiate and then she will address secondary school and club coaches at a session at the St Matthew's gymnasium.
Call goes out for crowd support
