Call for witnesses to fatal motorbike crash

Police have asked witnesses to help after an 18-year-old man died in a motorbike crash yesterday.

The man from Wellington was driving his red Yamaha XJ600 on State Highway 5, the Napier-Taupo road.

At about 3.30pm he crashed through an Armco roadside barrier some 2km east of the Te Haroto summit cafe, police said.

Senior Constable Tim Rowe said the man was riding in a group of three travelling from Napier to Taupo.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

The man died at the scene.

Mr Rowe said police wanted to speak to anyone who may have seen the motorcyclist on the road before the crash or when he crashed.

Police said anybody with information about the crash should phone Mr Rowe at Hastings Police on 06 831 0700.
