Communities across the country are being encouraged to take an active interest in preparing for natural disasters.
As the year draws to a close, New Zealanders are being asked to think about some of the natural hazards which have struck internationally.
The year 2005 has also just seen the establishment of the Earthquake Commission's first Fellow in natural hazards planning.
Bruce Glavovic said we can all learn from the Boxing Day tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, and the Pakistan earthquake.
He said reducing New Zealand's vulnerability to hazards requires the involvement of the whole country.
He added people need to work together in preparing for and recovering from disasters.
