KEY POINTS:
A fundraising walk to promote rail safety and awareness by former Black Cap Chris Cairns has been delayed for a second time, this time allowing the allrounder to play in the rebel Indian Cricket League.
Cairns plans to walk from Auckland to Rolleston, near Christchurch, in memory of his sister Louise, killed in 1993 when a truck drove into a train she was travelling on.
The walk was initially due to begin in February of this year, but was postponed until this month after the allrounder suffered a knee injury.
This weekend, it was confirmed Cairns, along with Chris Harris, Nathan Astle, and Hamish Marshall had signed to the breakaway league, which begins in November.
The Chris Cairns Foundation said the fundraising walk would now take place in August next year.
He plans to finish at the site of his sister's death, in Rolleston.
In January, national rail track operator OnTrack announced a 40-year low in road level crossing collisions in 2006.
Cairns said he hoped the foundation would make a difference.
"Since Louise died just over 100 people have lost their lives at road level crossings and I am committed to ensuring that people understand their responsibilities at level crossings and that this number does not continue to grow."
