KEY POINTS:
Former Black Cap Chris Cairns will start a 1000km walk through New Zealand from Pukekohe on Monday to bring public awareness of rail safety.
Cairns will finish his journey at Rolleston near Christchurch, at the site where his sister and two other women were killed when a truck hit the train they were travelling on in 1993.
No rest days are planned and he hopes to finish on September 21.
On the way, Cairns and his team will raise funds to launch a rail safety programme for school students.
