Cabin bags carried by Air New Zealand economy class passengers must weigh no more than 7kg each from October 29, the airline said today.
The limit applies to its cut-price trans-Tasman service, Tasman Express, which passengers will start travelling on from October 29.
The 7kg limit would be "strictly monitored", the airline warned.
"The trusty old bathroom scales may be called into service for something other than the morning weigh-in at home by travellers," a statement said.
Tasman Express tickets went on sale earlier this year, offering low fares for travel between New Zealand and Australia.
Cabin bags would be weighed as required at check-in, with a maximum size of 115cm to fit overhead lockers and a limit of one cabin bag per economy class flyer, Air NZ said.
If a cabin bag is over 7kg, passengers would be asked to check in some of its contents, or if at the departure gate, give up the bag for storage in the aircraft hold.
Passengers would still be allowed additional carry-on items such as coats, handbags and duty free purchases.
The checked-in baggage allowance for Tasman Express economy class would remain at 20kg per economy passenger, with a fee of $10 per extra kilogramme.
Business and Star Gold customers are allowed two pieces of cabin luggage at 7kg each and extended check-in luggage limits.
A handling fee of $20 per oversize item is also to be introduced from October 29.
Baggage length restrictions of 2.5m on all Air NZ domestic and international jet aircraft, and 1.8m on Air NZ Link airlines, will take effect from that date.
