First it was energy drinks. Now caffeine-infused gum is the latest product aimed at giving people a buzz.
Vibe Energy Gum claims to give consumers a burst of energy up to four times quicker than energy drinks, with a blend of ginseng, guarana and caffeine.
Two pieces of the gum are equivalent to one cup of coffee or energy drink.
However, New Zealand experts have warned that there are dangers with "energy" products.
"They work by increasing the metabolic rate and blood pressure. It affects people differently, but people have been known to have heart palpitations," said AUT nutritional lecturer Mikki Williden.
Importer Shane Pratt said he had no concerns about the safety of the product: "It's got warnings on the label that it's not suitable for children. My dad's 70 and it gives him a zing. It doesn't give him palpitations."
