KEY POINTS:
The Buy Kiwi Made campaign is backing the New Zealand Olympic team by promoting the fact that athletes and officials will be wearing locally made uniforms, the Government said today.
The initiative was one of three successful projects to promote New Zealand-made goods which have been granted a total of $490,120 in the first round of grants.
Kapiti-Horowhenua based DesignTex intends entering a contract to supply the Olympic gear, said Green Party MP Sue Bradford, the Government's spokeswoman on Buy Kiwi Made.
"With the help of Buy Kiwi Made funding of $252,000, DesignTex can help to build the profile of the apparel industry in New Zealand through a new Kiwi Made apparel brand," she said.
Another successful project was an advertising and information campaign proposed by Buy New Zealand Made Campaign Ltd, a subsidiary of Business New Zealand Inc. It has been granted $149,870.
The third grant, of $88,250, was to the Jewellery Manufacturers Federation, which is going to develop a marketing plan for an industry hallmark to symbolise the quality of New Zealand made jewellery.
The next bidding round for grants starts on July 16.
