A Waikato businessman has been sent to prison for at least 10 years for the rape and indecent assault of a young intellectually handicapped woman, the Waikato Times reports.
The man was sentenced in the Hamilton District Court this morning after he was found guilty in July of rape, unlawful sexual connection and indecent assault on a 19-year-old woman with a mental age 6 and 10 years old, between 2008 and 2009, the Times reported.
Despite being found guilty on the three charges, his name suppression remains in place as he is yet to go to trial for charges against another alleged victim.
The man last month went on a hunger strike for a fortnight at Waikeria Prison, claiming he was treated unfairly by the legal system because certain defence evidence was not allowed to be heard at his trial.
