Bush fire north of Wellsford brought under control

A bush fire that saw a school north of Wellsford evacuated this morning has been brought under control.

Six fire crews and two helicopters were called to the blaze on Oruawharo School Rd, in Northland, just after 10am.

Earlier Fire and Emergency NZ said the fire was well involved, and a building at Oruawharo School appeared to be under threat.

Fenz said all properties on the road had been evacuated, up to the Oruawharo Marae which sits on the corner of Oruawharo School Rd and Oruawharo Rd.

A police spokeswoman said staff and students were staying at the local marae as a precaution.

Emergency services are still on the scene.
