KEY POINTS:
A young woman was in a critical condition in hospital late last night after being hit by a bus and dragged at least 20m in central Auckland.
Horrified spectators leaving the Auckland Lantern Festival in Albert Park saw the bus hit the woman front-on near the intersection of Wellesley St and Mayoral Drive and keep driving up the hill to Princes St.
"The bus carried on," said Herald reporter Martin Johnston, who saw the accident.
"People were shouting at the bus to stop but the driver must not have realised."
No one could see the woman after the collision and he assumed her clothing must have been caught on the underside of the bus.
Johnston and his partner found her phone on the road and handed it to the police.
St John Ambulance spokesman Glen Taylor said the woman, aged about 20, had suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Auckland City Hospital.
