KEY POINTS:
Police have now spoken to the driver they believe was involved in a fatal crash on Dominion Road this week.
The driver this afternoon gave an interview and a signed statement setting out his version of events.
Rongfa Jiang, a 53-year-old from China, received fatal injuries when he was hit on Wednesday morning.
Police earlier said the driver heard a noise and stopped, looked back towards the injured man, then continued driving.
The drivers' union and Stagecoach say the driver did not see the man.
Following today's interview, Sergeant Matt Ford said: "We won't be discussing his statement publicly aside from to say we're happy with the level of co-operation we've received from the driver, his employer and supporters.
"We've still got a lot of work to do on the investigation into Mr Jiang's tragic death and that includes speaking to all 20 of the witnesses we've located since the incident."
Auckland Tramways Union president Gary Froggatt said last night that another man was struck after walking in front of a bus not far from where Mr Jiang received fatal injuries.
A Stagecoach source confirmed that a man was struck by a bus last week after coming out a dairy and trying to cross Dominion Rd while reading a newspaper.
He did not require medical treatment and blamed himself for the accident, the source said.
Mr Froggatt previously said the driver interviewed today was "terribly upset".
"It's just a mystery as to how this happened," he said. "None of the passengers said anything."
Nine passengers had been on the bus.
Senior Constable Bryan Hensley of the Auckland serious crash unit said police believed no other vehicles were nearby at the time of the accident. Forensic evidence from a corner of the bus has been taken for analysis.
