KEY POINTS:
The bus driver allegedly involved in a hit-and-run which left a man dead in Auckland yesterday is said to be "pretty stressed" about the situation.
Police returned to the scene in Dominion Road today in an effort to unravel the circumstances surrounding pedestrian Rongfa Jiang's death.
They believe the 53-year-old died after being hit by a Stagecoach bus while standing on or near a footpath and say the driver stopped 50 metres down the road and looked back but then continued his journey.
Police have yet to speak to the driver, who said through his union yesterday that he was not aware that he had hit anyone.
Today Auckland Tramways Union president Gary Froggatt said the bus driver was "pretty stressed out about the whole thing" and was receiving counselling. He was unlikely to return to work until next week.
Mr Froggatt rode the route today and said two witnesses, who were on the bus when the accident happened, had been identified by police.
He said the driver thought something had been thrown at the bus and stopped further along the road to check.
He described it as "unfortunate" that police chose to call it a hit-and-run.
None of the passengers said anything to the driver and Mr Froggatt said he would have expected that if there had been a hit-and-run "one of those passengers would have jumped up and down and said something".
The bus has been impounded by police for forensic examination.
Mr Jiang, a Chinese national, had been living with family in the Auckland suburb of Mt Eden.
