The 4WD driver killed in yesterday's collision with a Ritchies bus on State Highway 1 at Orari, about 40km north of Timaru, has been named by police.
He was Alan Ian Leigh, 58, of Patea, about 60km west of Wanganui.
Passengers on the bus travelling from Timaru to Christchurch were in shock but looked after each other after the fatal collision, Sergeant Graham Sharp told NZPA.
Mr Leigh died at the scene and two bus passengers were taken to hospital with minor to moderate injuries. The accident happened just after midday.
Mr Sharp said it appeared that the 4WD had crossed the centre line in to the path of the oncoming bus.
The 4WD was extensively damaged and the bus driver had lacerations to his leg which required stitches.
"The 18 passengers had a bit of shock, they were of varying ages, and all appeared to be looking after each other," Mr Sharp said.
Alcohol and speed were not believed to be factors in the crash.
