Eketahuna player Karyn Burling did Wairarapa proud at the Wellington Superbowls finals played at Johnsonville over the weekend.
Burling, a member of the Wairarapa development squad, made it through to the semi-finals where she was beaten by the eventual winner, Paula Meredith of Johnsonville, 13-5 10-3.
Meredith went on to beat Dorothy Bilderbeck of Kilbirnie on a tie breaker in the decider while the men's title went to another Johnsonville player in Rob Ashton who had a 9-4, 8-4 final victory over Bruce Miller of Tawa.
On the local front Carterton Bowling Club has been a hive of activity
First they had a visit from three times world champion and dual Commonwealth games gold medallist Sharon Sims who gave old and new members several pointers on how to improve their games.
A club men's drawn fours competition at Carterton was won by Jim Daysh, Graham Steffert, Len Epplett and Nigel Graham while the women's event was won by Carol Voller, Janet Steffert, Pat Rolls and Margaret Boucher.
An open 2-4-2 mixed pairs tournament at Carterton was sponsored by Richmond Funeral Home and attracted a full field of 16 teams. In fact, some teams had to be turned away. Brian Schischka and Dale Anderson of Carterton took the honours from Roy Smith and Robyn Schischka, also of Carterton. Third were Colin Pugh and Merle Evans of Masterton Park.
Martinborough held their George Brown Memorial fours tournament and a grand weekend was had by all participants. A Greytown team comprising Dave Murray, Robin McGhie, Adrian Tregurtha and Ken Marshall took the honours from the Martinborough combination of McGillicuddy, Wilkie, Thomas and Osbourne.
Apologies to umpire John Wright for omitting his name from those who successfully sat the international umpires exam. He along with Brian Tutty were the candidates and Jeff Gray the examiner.
It is appropriate too to acknowledge the fact that the late Dick Thomson and John Stroud also attained international status as umpires some years ago.
Masterton Bowling Club held another of their popular Sunday afternoon mixed galas at the weekend and again there was a good attendance. Jim McDonald, Peter Silk and Val Silk took first prize from Chris Fenwick, Val Haigh and Rex Wood.
