Burling knock leads Red Star to victory

Red Star, Flight Centre Lansdowne and A1 Homes Kuranui Old Boys all had wins when matches in the Wairarapa Cricket Association's Umpires Cup competition continued on Saturday.

Red Star batted first in their fixture with Newbolds Marist Old Boys and reached a healthy 274-7. Troy Burling was typically aggressive in his knock of 86 while Nik Karaitiana made 48, Chris Wenden 35 and Craig Stonely 32.

Marist Old Boys were then all out for 171 of which Greg Dennes made 73. Bowling for Red Star, Peter Sigvertsen took 5-31 and Jarred Watt 3-44.

Lansdowne and Wairarapa College featured in a low scoring match which saw both teams struggle to make it into three figures.

Lansdowne reached 117 thanks in the main to 30 from Sam Treseder. Doing most of the damage with the ball for the students was Hamish Woolgar who took 5-32.

Wairarapa College could muster only 103 in reply and it was Leighton Calkin who shone with the ball for Lansdowne, finishing with an impressive 5-24.

Kuranui Old Boys won by default over Greytown.

Umpire's Cup points leading into the semifinals on March 16 are: Kuranui Old Boys 18, Wairarapa College 18, Lansdowne 18, Red Star 14, Rathkeale College 10, Greytown 6 and Marist Old Boys 0.
