Police have charged a 21-year-old unemployed man with burgling a home while the owner was out attending the National Memorial Service for earthquake victims in Christchurch on Friday.
The man allegedly burgled a home in Lincoln on the morning of the memorial service, then another in Burnham the same afternoon.
He has not pleaded to the charges and was remanded in custody to April 5 in the Christchurch District Court session held in Rangiora today.
Judge David Holderness said the man, and some co-offenders, allegedly went to Bethels Road, Lincoln, on March 18, where $1500 worth of property was stolen. Later in the day they went to Grange Road, Burnham, where $5000 of property was taken.
He said one of the victims was away attending the memorial service in Hagley Park when their house was burgled.
He said the man had previous convictions for non-compliance with court orders.
A 30-year-old woman, also charged with the burglaries but who had no previous convictions, was remanded on bail to May 24.
