Burglars make off with $25k worth of jewellery

Up to $25,000 worth of jewellery was stolen from a Carterton home.

Up to $25,000 worth of jewellery has been stolen from a house in Carterton - one of seven burglaries in the region over the weekend.

The stolen jewellery, which included watches and rings, was taken during a burglary to a house in High St South, Carterton on Sunday.

Acting Senior Sergeant Ian Osland said police believed the burglars had entered the house during the daytime through an insecure window.

The upset victims were still checking to see what had been stolen, but it was understood some "quite expensive" items had been taken.

Masterton was the scene of three burglaries over the weekend, with Renall and Pownall streets both hit over Friday night/Saturday morning.

During the Renall St break-in, a burglar entered the house while the homeowners were asleep, jemmying open a ranch slider before making off with alcohol and a handbag.

The residents of a Pownall St house were awoken by the sound of a bang in the early hours of Saturday morning, and discovered their sleepout had been broken into, but nothing taken.

Police believed the noise was likely caused by the sound of outdoor furniture being pushed against a window as the burglar tried to get into the house.

A Masterton business was also targeted on Saturday night, with a rear door prised open and hair products including straighteners, curlers, and dryers stolen.

In other burglaries reported around the region this weekend, a chainsaw was stolen from an insecure shed on South Featherston Rd on Saturday night, a locked car was stolen from Wood St, Greytown overnight Friday and fishing gear, tools and alcohol were stolen from Mataikona Rd.

The stolen car was later recovered by police in Lower Hutt on Sunday afternoon.

Mr Osland said it was unclear at this stage if any of the burglaries were connected.
