An overnight raid on a Bay of Plenty auto parts shop all but slipped out of control for the burglars involved.
Thieves threw a concrete block through a front window at Fraser Cove Repco in Tauranga about 1.45am and stole two generators, worth $1000 each.
But duty manager Jason Pickerton said it looked like the thieves wanted radar detectors housed in a glass cabinet near the counter.
They threw an oil container at the cabinet - but rather than smashing the glass, the container exploded, covering many store products with oil.
"It is just a mess, there is oil everywhere, I think they must have been covered too because of the footprints they left," Mr Pickerton said.
The store opened a fortnight ago.
