KEY POINTS:
A heavily pregnant woman narrowly missed being shot during a disagreement between two employees at an Auckland wreckers shop.
The woman, who is believed to be about seven months pregnant, was closing a sliding garage door when a man fired two to three shots at the Otahuhu store on Friday evening. One of the shots flew through the door close to where the woman was standing.
Detective Wati Chaplow of Mangere CIB said the gunman was believed to be an employee who had had a disagreement with another employee earlier in the day.
He had gone home but returned several hours later with a rifle and started shooting in a "number of directions".
"One went through the front sliding garage door which narrowly missed a pregnant woman."
After the shots were fired, police say, the man got into his car and left again.
The pregnant woman was not injured but was shaken by her close call.
Mr Chaplow said police managed to make phone contact with the man they believed was responsible for the shooting and convinced him it was best for him to hand himself in, rather than for them to hunt him down.
Yesterday, a 29-year-old man turned up at the Mangere police station. He was arrested and is expected to face charges relating to discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Mr Chaplow said police were still trying to piece together more about what happened and why.
However, the Herald understands the disagreement was over money - the man had allegedly gone to his employer asking for a loan to buy drugs but was refused the money.
It is also understood the man has gang connections.
