Prime Minister Helen Clark says today's Budget is an important step in building a stronger economy and creating greater prosperity.
The Prime Minister pointed to increased funding for venture capital, skills training, research, and business support programmes.
"Our future as a nation is going to be driven by educated people, and a dynamic and enterprising small business sector," the Prime Minister said.
She said the Budget reflected a need for Government "to be smarter and more active" in getting the best economic results for New Zealand.
The Budget also recognised the pressing social problems to be addressed.
"We are putting more money into key areas like health, education, and Child, Youth and Family Services, and capacity building programmes in Maori and Pacific Island communities," said Helen Clark.
