KEY POINTS:
Fans of the Steve McQueen classic Bullitt will be snapping up Ford's latest legacy cash-in - a limited edition Mustang Bullitt.
Bullitt, the 1968 movie, featured what is arguably the best car chase of all time, with combination of V8 Mustang, steep San Francisco streets and certifiable driving.
So Ford has released the 2008 Mustang, packing a 4.6 litre V8 which pushes out a meagre 235kW and 433Nm of torque. Nothing a whacking great supercharger couldn't fix.
Ford claims that the Bullitt edition, with chassis and suspension modifications, is the most balanced Mustang ever.
It is available in the Dark Highland Green paint as per the car in the movie - but the big effort from Ford's engineers is in the car's exhaust note.
Using a specially-mastered DVD, the men in white coats were able to deliver an exhaust note that matches the film.
Only 7700 of the Bullitt models will be made, for the US market, meaning it's highly unlikely that any will find their way down to New Zealand, and any that do will need to be converted to right hand drive.
"The 2008 Mustang Bullitt embodies the true spirit of the 1968 movie car," said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development.
"Like the original Bullitt, this car dials the driving dynamics up a notch for Mustang enthusiasts who love the performance, handling and the sweet sound of Ford power that only Mustang can deliver."
The launch of the limited edition 2008 Mustang Bullitt coincides with the 40th anniversary of the release of the Warner Bros. film that gave the original car its name.
