Rugby legend Wayne `Buck' Shelford will join Jenny Craig as its new ambassador with a commitment to shedding 20kg, the company said today.
Like many New Zealand men, Shelford had allowed his weight to creep up on him, Jenny Craig New Zealand and Australia managing director Amy Smith said.
"At a time when about 62 per cent Kiwi adults are either overweight or obese, more people need to incorporate healthy eating and exercise into their lifestyles," Ms Smith said.
"Obesity is a risk factor in this country's number one killer, which is cardiovascular disease.
"We believe if anyone can inspire Kiwis to take those steps to look after themselves, it's Buck."
Shelford said he knew he was carrying more weight than was healthy.
"I've got 20kg to lose to get back to my fighting weight, which is where I want to be and that's why I've gone to Jenny Craig for help," Shelford said.
He hoped to set an example for all New Zealanders, especially the Maori and Pacific Island communities.
