An 82-year-old Wainuiomata man was attacked with a wooden baton by two teenagers inside his home last night.
Hutt Valley police are now investigating the "cowardly" assault.
Detective Sergeant Mike Sears of the Hutt Valley CIB said the the Norfolk Street resident answered a knock at his door shortly before 8pm last night.
"He was confronted by two young males, who asked to speak to a person known to the victim. He was then pushed to the ground and struck over the head with a wooden baton. Demands were made for cash."
He said the offenders then made a "messy" search of the house, before leaving with an undisclosed amount of cash.
