Grass fires kept Wairarapa firefighters on their toes over the weekend.
Mike Wanoa, fire communications shift supervisor, said a Masterton fire crew joined volunteers from the Castlepoint Rural Fire Party to douse a roadside grass fire on the Masterton to Mataikona Rd shortly before 10am on Saturday.
Mr Wanoa said the fire had involved only a small area of vegetation on a hillside near the road, although the blaze had been burning under powerlines and posed a consequently greater risk.
Martinborough firefighters and Ngawi Rural Fire Party volunteers had together battled a grass fire that erupted on Cape Palliser Rd soon after 5am yesterday. The blaze involved a small area of grass and was quickly doused, he said.
Mr Wanoa said Carterton firefighters also were called to douse a vegetation fire after a blaze erupted in shelter belt trees on Brooklyn Rd about 11.50am yesterday.
