KEY POINTS:
Manukau City Mayor Len Brown was yesterday still in a critical condition in Middlemore Hospital's intensive care unit, after suffering a setback while recovering from major heart surgery.
Mr Brown had a heart attack at the Pacific Music Awards on May 31 and collapsed on stage while giving the opening address.
He needed a four-hour bypass operation and has since had further surgery as a result of the setback on Wednesday.
A Manukau City Council spokesman said yesterday that Mr Brown's condition was essentially the same as it was on Wednesday, when he was taken into the intensive care unit.
The mayor was still being closely monitored, the spokesman said.
"We just keep calling the hospital every few hours and the hospital keeps saying, 'Critical'."
On Wednesday, Acting Mayor Gary Troup said it was a worry that Mr Brown had taken a turn for the worse, given that he had been making good progress.
"Len has undergone further surgery and is being closely monitored in intensive care.
"I have been in contact with his family and have offered council's full support."
