Wairarapa senior men's cricket selector Mark Brown has put his bowlers on notice leading into their Chapple Cup one-day fixture with Hawke's Bay in Napier on Sunday.
Brown says his attack have too often struggled to get their length right in Hawke Cup fixtures with Taranaki and Horowhenua-Kapiti over the past couple of weekends and with Hawke's Bay having a number of talented stroke makers in their ranks he knows that could spell big trouble this weekend.
"We haven't been asking enough questions of the batters, we need to be at them all the time,"Brown said.
Hopes are paceman Seth Rance will be on deck for Wairarapa in Napier. The match will come just two days after he has played a four-day Plunket Shield fixture for the Central Stags against the Otago Volts-also in Napier- but Brown is optimistic of him fronting up.
There is though the possibility of Stags management preferring Rance to rest and to cover for that possibility Brown has brought Red Star all-rounder Nicolai Karaitiana into the Wairarapa squad. He is a handy medium pace bowler and also bats usefully in the middle to lower order.
It's not only the Wairarapa bowlers who will under the microscope , however, with the top order batting also looking to make a more positive impact than they have so far this season.
"Most of the specialist batsmen have had at least one good start but too few of them have managed to convert it into big runs,' Brown said. "Again we need greater consistency, that's the key".
Part of that top order will be a former Wairarapa skipper in John Peters, who plays his club cricket for Collegians in Wellington these days. The left hander generally likes to get on with the job and the one-day game should bring out the best in him.
Peters will probably come in at first drop behind two other noted attackers in Brock Price and Henry Cameron while current captain Sam Curtis will be at No.4. He returned from injury to score an unbeaten 82 against Horowhenua-Kapiti and his will undoubtedly be seen as the prize scalp by the Hawke's Bay bowlers.
Interestingly enough Wairarapa has always looked better equipped for limited-overs cricket in recent seasons than for the Hawke Cup two-days but for some unfathomable reason their record has been much better in the latter.
The full Wairarapa squad for Sunday is: Henry Cameron, Brock Price, John Peters, Sam Curtis, Steve Coleman, Seth Rance, Matthew Stringfellow, Daniel Ingham, Dion van Deventer, Robbie Anderson, Dane Buchanan, Jamie Holmes, Nicolai Karaitiana.
